Obsidian Butterfly: Release date: February 2000. This is the next installment in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series. For those keeping count it is book number 9 for our favorite heroine and the first hard back in the series. Anita travels to Santa Fe when Edward calls in his "favor". What could be so big and scary that even Death thinks he is out matched and needs our girls help? How about a Master of the City who claims she's an Aztec Goddess. What happens next is anyone's guess. You'll have to get a copy to find out, because Laurell isn't telling us. Don't think we haven't tried to find out either. ISBN: not assigned yet
Kiss of Shadows: Release Date: September 2000 This is the first in the new Fey Series from Laurell K. Hamilton. The Fey are invited to move to the United States by Thomas Jefferson when their homeland is in turmoil. They set up residence in the in the States, settling in the Cahokia Mounds in Illinois. Meredith is torn between the Courts, being of lineage of both. She is also torn by the old ways versus the new modern world. She has to find a way to survive them both while helping her people adjust to a rapidly changing world. ISBN: 0345423399

WFC has NO masquerade and is considered a more professional convention with less fan activity and fewer children. Big pro attendance. There isn't a dress code but you should wear dressy casual and dressy for evening events for this con.
Top of NewsletterIf you've never attended a convention before, they are a great deal of fun. If you have kids, bring them along. Most conventions (not WFC) offer Children's Track programming especially geared for the little ones. Activities include: panels on a variety of topics, Writers Workshops, autograph sessions, parties, Dealers Room featuring booths selling books, weapons, jewelry, t-shirts and too many other things to list. Game Centers offer all your favorite games. Masquerades and costume contests are usually Saturday night. Basically, it is a non-stop party from Friday night till Sunday afternoon. Be prepared to go home very tired, but very happy. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
Top of NewsletterAnita Blake - Book 10
Laurell is hard at work on book 10, as yet untitled. Laurell tells us she missed having the entire crew in Obsidian Butterfly to play with. So many of your favorite characters will be back for book 10 including Jean Claude, Richard, Ronnie, Mrs. Pringle and Custard.
We have already gotten a sneak preview we are going to share those tid bits with you: Marianne, who has been training Anita in her talents, arranges for both Richard and Jean Claude to confront Anita about their "arrangement". What a thing to come home to, those two on the front porch. And this is all in just chapter 1! We can only imagine where it goes from there. Hopefully, by the next newsletter we will be able to tell you a bit more.
Anita Facts: Laurell originally intended to kill Jean Claude at the end of Circus of the Damned. Aren't we glad she thought twice? Where would we be without our favorite 'tub toy".
Top of NewsletterAs some of you are aware, the Ricia Mainhardt agency no longer represents Laurell. This was strictly a business decision on Laurell's part. Laurell simply felt it was time for a change and made one. The speculation going around that the change was due to money, Ricia's injuries and other ideas are simply not true. Occasionally we all need to change and move in new directions.
Top of NewsletterOfficial Club Web Page
The Club will host the Official Laurell K. Hamilton web page. We have designers and a web master. Thank you for all the offers to do a web page! Everyone is so generous to offer to share his or her talents and host for us. Still, feel free to make suggestions or share a goodie. We think the design we've chosen is really unique and will showcase our favorite author's books to their utmost! One will be graphic free for those with slower systems. All new details, including a copy of the newsletter will be posted, as well as a list of current club goodies and must-haves for the LKH fan. Some things will be available in a limited quantity. We will try and tell you how many of each item we have, so check the page regularly for details!
The Web site will include one, possibly two chapters from each book. Just something to tantalize and tease a bit. Also a great way to tempt your friends without lending your books.

Top of NewsletterSo many folks ask much the same questions, we have condensed the answers and questions into one. Hope this answers most of yours.
Nameless Newsletter title chosen yet?
Yes! You should have seen it at the top of the newsletter. "News To Die For" was the winner. Thanks to our winner and devoted fan Sherluk. A personally autographed copy of a book is on its way to our winner! Thank you to all whom sent in suggestions. Sorry we didn't chose yours. But stay tuned for other contests.
I wonder, is Edward gay?
Laurell did tell us Edward is not gay, and that if he is he didn't tell her. Where do these rumors start? Though it could make for an interesting story line: Jason and Edward? Nah!
How do I reach....?
Jean Claude, Richard and the other characters are not real people, they exists only in Laurell's imagination. Laurell does not base her characters on real people. Darn, we were hoping for an address!
Can I be a character?
Character names are also from Laurell's imagination (must be a really active place). Offers of money or other bribes will not get your name used. Thank goodness! We don't have that kind of cash anyway.
So do you personally.....?
No inference should be made by any of the topics or traits of the characters about Laurell or her lifestyle. She does lots of research on any of the things she covers, it does not mean she has a personal interest in any of them, nor engage in any of the activities depicted.
Where are the "real" vampires?
No, Laurell does not believe she is a vampire, nor does she know of any "real" vampires or other preternatural creatures. She is an excellent writer with a vivid imagination and that's as close to real as she gets. But hey isn't it fun to speculate?
I really want to meet you.
Fans are always encouraged to ask questions, express your love of the books and generally gush at Personal Appearances or in mail. Don't worry, we have a sneaking suspicion there are people Laurell would gush at too.
However, attempting to call Laurell at home or just "drop in" is not welcome. This shouldn't be hard for anyone to understand. You know you a wonderful person, a big fan, and totally harmless, but your still a stranger. Please, respect Laurell's privacy. That is why there are Personal Appearances, it is your chance to meet and greet the lady in person. She really is a neat lady and lots of fun. So bring your books and your questions, but leave the really cool weapon you want to show her at home. You don't want to get arrested do you? To say nothing of it scares the heck out of us!
How do I get a signing in my area?
Laurell does as many signings as she possibly can. The best way to get her to your area is to contact your local Sci-Fi/Fantasy or mystery group and see if they will invite her as a Guest of Honor at one of their conventions. She really does enjoy meeting fans and tries to make as many as her schedule will permit. Size or compensation is not the deciding factor.
When will the sequel to Nightseer be available?
At this time there are no plans to release the sequel. The publisher says sales do not warrant the release of a sequel. Nevertheless, it is being held as option for a future date.
Is there ever going to be a movie or TV series?
We're all for those too! The rights to the Anita Blake series are being shopped around for a possible movie or series. So far that is all we can say. Though I think everyone has their own opinions on who should star in which role. Some of the choices have been interesting to say the least.
Anita Blake will be discontinued?
There is no truth to the rumor that Laurell plans to discontinue the Anita Blake series. Laurell has enough outlines and ideas to last the rest of her life. So as long as we keep buying we'll keep enjoying Anita and the gang.
How do I get a copy of Club Vampyre or Black Moon Inn?
These are not new books! The Science Fiction Book Club bought the rights to the Anita Blake series and is releasing multiple books in single bound editions. You must contact them about becoming a member. Your local retailer will not be able to order these for you. Not necessarily a recommendation, but some of the online auctions have had copies of the books available. Shop at your own risk!
Blue Moon sold out here!
This is the best example of why you should order your books rather than wait for them to hit the shelves. Use the ISBN and make your retailer happy!
But they said they could get me a copy sooner!
We are aware that there are some wrong release dates floating around out there, specifically for the next Anita book. We have tried to notify those in error but they pop up faster than we can keep up. The dates listed at the beginning of the newsletter are correct. If anything changes we will let everyone know.
Jean-Claude was only 30 years old when he first became a vampire.
Alternate Historians
Alternate Historians is the Writers Group Laurell is a member of. If you would like to join one, perhaps you could start one? This group were all writer wannabe's who got together and offer critique and moral support to one another. Find a few friends who also want to be writers and give it a try, or look for an established group in your area to join. Maybe we will be starting your fan club in a few years.
What will happen with my name and address?
All information collected for club membership is private. This information is exclusively for club usage. Personal information will not be sold or shared with any other organization without first notifying members of our intent and securing their permission.
What's in the future newsletters?
Future newsletters will include con reports from Laurell, and the committee members. Other club members are invited to send in their own reports for possible inclusion. Especially reports for those cons that are not in the St. Louis area. Rachel is a full time student. Joan is a full time mommy. Darla's job prohibits her from traveling much. So if you go, let us know.
We hope to include some photos from various cons. Those will not be returned to sender. So only send us copies, not the only one you have! The cut and paste to make them work will destroy them.
We will also have more book news, tid bits, spoilers with a warning they are such, Question and Answers, Quotes from Laurell and other authors and anything else we can think of to cram in here.
Did you know PN Elrod has her own newsletter? The "Teeth in the Neck Gang" is the title. If you are interested in subscribing to TING, send $10 to the same address as for the Beginning Writers Kit.
Can you help me be a writer?
If you want to be a writer then go for it! However, Laurell's schedule really does preclude her from reading your manuscript and offering suggestions.
In the mean time, PN Elrod, (you know her books don't you?), has a great beginning writers kit at a bargain price.
Pat use to offer this as a paper packet, but has since switched it to online. The accumulated knowledge therein is free.
Instead of trying to rephrase what Pat says so well, here's a direct quote and the information you need to get your own copy:

No, this is NOT a guarantee that you will be a
published writer--that's entirely up to you--but it IS an
assembly of extremely helpful articles and items I wish
I'd had when first starting out. Recommended reading
lists, how-to articles, do's and don't's, some
humorous, others serious, but all meant to point you in the
right direction for a good beginning so you don't have to
keep re-inventing the wheel!
Want to know if Jack Fleming will marry Bobbi? Or
will Escott ever get a date? Will Strahd von Zarovich ever
cheer up? Will Jonathan Barrett return to America? Will Elrod
be the next centerfold for Writer's Digest? They'll
be glad to answer you! Who the heck is this committee? We are readers just like you, fans of the books.
Bonnee Pierson, who use to do the newsletter, (and a fine
job she did too!) just could not fit it into her schedule
anymore. So we offered to take over. Yes, we count
ourselves the lucky ones. A little about who we
are: Rachel Mincey: Rachel is a full time college
student from Alabama. She is however getting to be well
known at St. Louis Cons. Rachel first met Laurell at
Name-That-Con in 1998. Rachel found her first Anita book
while wandering the aisle of a book store long before
that. Joan Knappenberger is well known in Sci/fi
circles. She is the Pro Liaison for Archon and a longtime
friend of Laurell's. Not to mention just an all around
fun lady. Darla Cook is a computer programmer. Darla first
had the pleasure of meeting Laurell at Name-That-Con in
1995 shortly after picking up the copy of a Laughing
Corpse Laurell had donated to the St. Louis Public
Library. Jonathan Green is a web designer and network
specialist who is hosting and designing the fan club page.
You may recognize him as Eridine from the web. He always
wanted to be Master of something, so we made him our Web
Master. Jonathan first met Laurell at Name-That-Con in 1994
when she was reading from one of her books. He is the
keeper of the original Cybershrine to Anita Blake; it only
seemed fitting that we allow him to do the page. For those of you who are well versed in the
minutiae of the Anita series: yes, there was a Jonathan
Greene in Blue Moon. Laurell swears it was a
coincidence and neither noticed it until someone else
pointed it out. Anitaverse: Shortened form for Anita Universe.
Used to indicate Anita's reality, this of course, is
different from ours! Hi, folks. Here is my contribution for the third
newsletter. You have Darla and Rachel to thank that there
is another newsletter at all. Left to my own devices there
might never have been another newsletter. The desire was
there, but the time and energy were not. I've been
writing books as fast as my sanity and family obligations
allow, sometimes faster. I figured everyone would prefer
more books to more newsletters. If I'm wrong in that
assumption write in and let me know. Speaking of my books, let's discuss why
there's a bigger gap than normal between book eight,
BLUE MOON, and book nine, OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY. First
OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY will be my first hard back, which means
that there will be an Anita book once a year, instead of
every nine months. The reason for the spacing is that the
publisher figures that the fans, won't want to pay
twenty plus dollars more than once a year for a book. Then
when book ten, UNTITLED, comes out in hard back,
they'll put OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY out in paperback. Or
that's the plan at least. But you know what they say
about plans, best laid or otherwise. Yes, originally, OB was supposed to come out in
October of '99, but instead it's coming out in
February of 2000. Why is that, you might ask? Well, because
I am now doing two series. I have a new series coming out
from Del Rey (Anita is still coming out from Ace). The new
series is the Meredith Gentry series, if there's more
to the title for the overall series I am not privy to it.
I'm just the writer, what do I know? I do know that the
first book is A KISS OF SHADOWS. It was originally
scheduled for June of '99. KISS OF SHADOWS has not been
a June release of this year for more than a year, yet
I'm hearing from many sources that the book is still
listed as coming out in June on Amazon, Barnes and Noble,
and one person even told me B. Dalton. Sorry to everyone
who was waiting with baited breath, but KISS OF SHADOWS
won't be out until September of 2000. I hear the
groans, now. Again, my apologies. A variety of things
happened to delay publication of both books. First, the books are getting longer. OB is the
longest Anita book yet, almost eight hundred manuscript
pages, a record for me. KISS is nearly as long. A longer
book takes longer to write, simple as that. Next, the world
of hard backs seems to be different from paperbacks. Yes,
the new series is also hard back. I guess I'm moving up
in the world. (Though, having been raised poor I feel
vaguely guilty about the jump in price. I don't think I
owned a hard back book, except for schoolbooks until I was
married.) One of the differences between paper and hard is
more worry about getting quotes for the books for one
thing, and a dozen different considerations. Some of this
business stuff has delayed the books. It's been
interesting watching the two publishing houses trying to
work around each other's schedules. But I must take my
own share of fault for the delays. I'd written five
Anita books in a row, back to back. I thought I had it down
to a science, what I failed to consider about book nine,
OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY, was that it is set out of town. Santa
Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico to be exact, and that meant
that none of the supporting characters were in the book. It
was just Anita and, gasp, Edward. I love Edward, he is
wonderful to write, and fascinating to read about, but he
is not a fun traveling companion. Also, I had to recreate
all the supporting cast, because except for Anita and
Edward the book required all new characters. New settings,
new characters, and it was like recreating the wheel. It
took almost twice as long to write as a normal Anita book
because of that. As for KISS OF SHADOWS, like I said, I'd
written five, six counting OB, Anita books in a row. It had
been a long time since I'd written the first book in a
new series. I'd forgotten what it was like to have to
start from scratch, to build a world from the ground up. I
wanted to do it. As much as I loved Anita and the gang, I
needed a break, something different. Long before I finished
KISS I was wondering what in the world I had been thinking.
Anita had me spoiled. Her voice is strong in my head and
comes almost without thinking now, but it wasn't always
so. Having to write Merry and her gang reminded me that
once Anita had been a stranger to me, too. Once upon a time
I had never seen Jean-Claude glide across a room, or Edward
shoot, or Richard angst over his beast. I remembered what I
had forgotten that when I was writing the first Anita book,
GUILTY PLEASURES, I didn't know if I could do it. It
was so different from anything I had ever written. It was
so different from anything I'd ever read. What if no
one wanted to read it? What if it wasn't any good? The
usual doubts that plague a beginning writer. Or, for that
matter, any writer. From the first book, I got a multi-book
contract for three books. When I set down to write the
second book, THE LAUGHING CORPSE, I didn't know if I
could pull it off again. I didn't know if Anita's
voice would come to me a second time. Then the second book
was finished, and I didn't know if I could do it a
third time, but THE CIRCUS OF THE DAMNED, worked, and
worked well. It was either book four, or five that I came
up with the idea of writing the first chapter of the next
book when I finished the book before it. At the end of a
book the voice of the main character is very strong, the
world vivid, so writing the beginning of the next book is
easy. It means that months, or weeks later (how else do you
think I got the first few books out six months apart) when
I sat down to begin the next book I wasn't fighting the
dreaded blank screen. I had the next book started, and that
primed the pump nicely. Since I've come up with this
trick it has sped things up considerably. But KISS OF SHADOWS is the beginning of a new
series, a new world, a new vision. It's set in modern
day America like Anita. I love combining magic and monsters
with the everyday. One of the main differences between the
two series is Merry's background. She is a princess of
the High Court of the Fey. Though, her father thought it
important that Merry know her country of birth so he sent
her to public school in St. Louis, and they had a house
outside the fairie mounds. So Merry is very much a
mid-western girl in some respects, but she is also a
princess of the high court. She is in her early thirties,
which at the rate Anita's going I'm not sure when
she'll hit thirty. Anita averages about a year for
every three books, do the math, and you'll realize how
much more slowly Anita time goes than our time. She and I
started out at exactly the same age and the time shift is
beginning to get on my nerves. At this rate she'll
still be young and kicking monster booty when I'm using
a walker. I don't know whether that's depressing or
encouraging. Another difference between the two series is
that this time I know there's a romantic angle to the
series. The romance just snuck up on me in the Anita
series. Honest, I didn't mean to mire Anita in a
romance so complicated that it makes most soap operas look
restful. With Merry I know her love life will be complex.
Let's just say that there are more than two guys in the
running for her . . . heart. This will definitely have to
be my very last series with studly guys in it. Oh, okay,
maybe not, but my writer's group is beginning to make
jokes about Laurell's Hisem, a play on Harem, for those
of you scratching your heads. The biggest difference between the two series is
that Merry is a closed-ended series. I know X number of
books (I'm not sure exactly how many. I think 6 to 8,
but maybe less, maybe more) that the series will end. I
even know what the big finale is supposed to be. Anita is
an open ended series which means I plan on writing Anita
books as long as everyone wants to keep reading them, and
as long as I'm still having a good time with the gang.
I think that a writer should not keep writing a series
merely for money, but also for love. Though admittedly the
money is nice, and it lets the writer do other things, like
eat, and have vacations. Eating keeps the body going, but
vacations keep the sanity going. One without the other just
isn't very helpful. I've got eighty plus pages of book ten done.
Though I'm still waiting on my last expert to get back
to me so I can do the finishing touches on OB. Then I have
to do the final rewrite on KISS. Then I get to go back to
finish book ten. And yes, I do have the first chapter of
the second Merry book started. The second book is titled A
CARESS OF TWILIGHT, unless the title gets changed. I like
the title a lot so I think that's what it will be, but
I've been wrong before over the years, so I'll
cover my . . . bases. I am hoping that the second Merry book is easier
to write than the first. I think it will be. I've got
her voice now, and the world is there ready to be traveled
through. The supporting characters are in place, and the
overarching plot is begun. Merry let's me do things
that Anita either would never do, or would do only kicking
and screaming at the wrong end of a gun. Merry doesn't
think like a human being, she thinks like a sidhe, a high
court fey. Which is as it should be, but it certainly took
me long enough to find that mind set. Me being a small town
mid-western girl, it's hard to write first person
narrative about someone who is not what I am. But after
much weeping and wailing I think I pulled it off. You
readers out there will be the final judge. I'm sure
you'll let me know if I succeeded, or if I failed.
It's not like you guys keep your opinions to
yourselves. But KISS OF SHADOWS took nearly four times as
long to write as an Anita book, about what the first Anita
book took to write. When I planned the schedules for the
books I didn't know it would take so much longer. But,
as with Anita, every book took less time, because practice
does make faster, if nothing else. I'm hoping the same
trend will work with Merry. I already have the plot and
most of the first few chapters of A CARESS OF TWILIGHT
planned out. But right now I'm working on book ten of
Anita, and I'm enjoying the hell out of myself. I'm
writing book ten of a series, hundreds of thousands of
words and I am having a wonderful time. Strangely, Anita
and I haven't seen the main characters in almost as
long – six months. She's been trying to decide
what to do with her life, so she's left the boys alone
for six months, which has meant leaving most of the rest of
the supporting cast alone. Hard to be friends with a
werewolf if you're not speaking with his Ulfric. Hard
to hang with Ronnie when she's dating Richard's
best friend. Hard to be friendly with any of the local
vamps when you're not talking with the Master of the
City. Alright, I don't mean talking. I mean the only
way to stay celibate is to stay the hell away from Richard
and Jean-Claude. OB is Edward's book. We learn about
his personal life, scary thought, his past, and Anita gets
to decide if she really wants to be Edward when she grows
up. Book ten, still untitled, is my book, and Anita's.
We get to see the entire gang, and there will be plenty of
Richard and Jean-Claude to go around. Also Jason, Asher,
Ronnie, Larry, Dolph, and so fourth, and so on. If I named
every continuing character, I'd never get to bed
tonight. My editor complained that too many people kept
surviving from book to book, that the cast was growing too
large and couldn't some of them die. I did not throw a
heavy object at her and start screaming, I calmly asked
whom did she have in mind. When push came to shove she
couldn't suggest anyone that she was willing to give
up. Neither can I. Of course, no promises. THIS IS A
SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ GUILTY PLEASURES. I
didn't know that Phillip was going to die until just
before it happened. But I'm not planning on anyone
taking that last long good-bye. I'd miss them, whoever
it was. So the plan for the books from now on, baring
disasters, natural or otherwise, is an Anita book every
Spring, and a Merry book every Fall until Merry reaches her
climax, pun intended, and we pack her and her beloved up
and go home. But Anita and the gang will keep going, no
plans to stop. I have something like seventeen book plots
in the series tentatively mapped out. I stay at about
fifteen plots because one book will lead to new ideas, new
plots, so some books keep getting pushed further and
further down the line. But if you guys keep reading, and
buying, we'll get to them all. Laurell Well, that's it for this newsletter. Please
